I: Thank you for waiting everyone, I’m pleased to get this under way, the person who will be right next to me is the producer of the film, Liz Watts, if you could welcome Liz! Liz produced the film and of course the producer of Animal Kingdom as well. Next to Liz, well there he is, and we have David Michod, Guy Pearce and David Linde.
Yes mam, go for it.
M: Hi, sorry, Maria from Rob Pattinson Australia. David, last week I went to a talk that Liz gave and she mentioned that you selected 20 songs and gave to Guy and Rob to help develop their characters. I’m curious from Guy and Rob, what songs resinated the most with you that helped you develop Eric and Rey?
RP: We were given songs?
GP: I don’t think.
M: Did you make that up?
DM: I gave Scoot McNairy a particular, I don’t know why him.
M: Ohh, that’s a shame.
DM: No, actually, I don’t know why I didn’t, but I actually kind of liked doing that, you know, when you’re trying to, you know, pre-production, rehearsal is all about trying to communicate a movie to the people you’ll be working with, so that when you step on set that first day everybody is making the same movie, and you know, people put together kind of reference books and images, for me the most effective thing is music. Music can communicate a tone more effectively than anything else, but I don’t know why I didn’t give you any.
I: David, you’re a writer and director, when you write and you wrote this script were you listening to anything particular, do you write to music?
DM: I don’t, I can’t write with music playing, but while I’m, you know, from my little moments of downtime, I tend to dive down rabbitholes of, you know, like I choose rabbitholes of you know, this thing, people who bord this also bord this and I can do that for like seven hours later, and in some weird corner of the internet and while I’m doing that I just constantly collecting things, making playlists of things and while I was doing this there was a lot of that music made its way into the movie. Colin S is a fantastic saxophonist who I’ve seen play the Sydney Festival last year I think, amazing, just one man and a saxophone, producing sounds that you’ve never heard before. The pianist composer William Bezinsky, I just start collecting this stuff, and a lot of it falls away, a lot of it feels totally irrelevant, but some of it really sticks.
I: If The Rover had a particular song that summed it up, is there one that comes to mind?
DM: No.

DM: Nem, igazából, nem tudom miért, de szerettem ezt csinálni, amikor még az előlészületeknél és a próbáknál jár az ember, akkor próbálod átadni, elmondani a filmet azoknak akikkel dolgozni fogsz, így amikor a forgatás első napján megérkezel, akkor tudod, hogy mindenki ugyanazon filmre gondol, és vannak olyanok, akik összeraknak egy listát a történethez kapcsolódó könyvekről, vagy képeket készítenek, de számomra a leghatásosabb a zene. A zene át tudja adni a tónust sokkal hatékonyabb módon, mint bármi más, de nem tudom miért nem adtam semmit.
I: David, te író és rendező vagy, amikor ezt a forgatókönyvet írtad hallgattál valamilyen zenét? Zenére írsz?
DM: Nem, nem tudok zene mellett írni, de amikor kisebb szüneteket tartok, mert szokásom elmerülni ilyen nyúl üregekbe, amiket magamnak választok, aztán ott embereket rakok ide, aztán átpakolom őket amoda (itt nem igazán értettem miről beszél), és ezt több órán keresztül tudom csinálni az internet egy eldugott sarkában, és amíg ezt csinálom, addig folyamatosan gyűjtök dolgokat, lejátszási listákat készítek, és amikor ezt a filmet készítettem, nagyon sok olyan zene volt, ami bekerült a filmbe. Colin S egy fantasztikus szaxofonjátékos, akit láttam a Sydney Fesztiválon tavaly, ha jól emlékszem, és lenyűgöző volt, csak egy ember a szaxofonnal, olyan hangokat hoz létre, amiket még nem hallottál korábban. Aztán a zongorista zeneszerző William B, és csak elkezdek gyűjteni dolgokat, amik közül sok elveszik mert mégse számít, de vannak olyanok is, amik igazán megmaradnak.
